Spectra Reading — Grade 8
advancedThis course teaches students to analyze how a character changes, identify character traits, understand what dialogue reveals, explore how a story changes from another point of view, and follow plot, climax, the main character, and mood. Students also study cause and effect, tell fact from opinion, evaluate the author's purpose and whether both sides of an argument are shown, interpret similes, metaphors, idioms, and hyperbole, and predict what happens next. These skills are built using short stories and non-fiction passages on topics including immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, Amelia Earhart, fossil hunters, and the Curiosity rover on Mars.
