Spectra Reading — Grade 6
intermediateThis course teaches students to find the main idea, choose the best summary, identify the author's purpose and persuasion, tell fact from opinion, understand cause and effect, compare and contrast, and put events in order. Students also learn to recognize setting, climax, and theme, tell fantasy from a story set in real life, determine word meanings from Latin and Greek roots, and interpret similes, idioms, and hyperbole. These reading skills are developed through short stories and non-fiction passages about lighthouses, bats, bird migration, the Everglades, and the photographer Ansel Adams.
