advancedThis course will study testimony through Frederick Douglass's Narrative and Omar ibn Said's 1831 Arabic autobiography, followed by writing of the civil rights movement including King's Letter from Birmingham Jail, Malcolm X, Shirley Chisholm, John Lewis, and Rosa Parks. Students will consider the American century in story and speech through Code Talker, the Harlem Renaissance, and speeches by Wilson, Roosevelt, and Churchill. The course will also cover The Importance of Being Earnest as satire and farce, along with the sonnet, extended metaphor, and allusion in poems from Shakespeare to Langston Hughes.
