intermediateThis course will study the Shahnameh in Ferdowsi's verse to learn what an epic is, covering Zahhak, Zal and the Simorgh, and Rostam and Sohrab. Students will read Julius Caesar as a tragedy about power, studying meter, iamb, couplet, and free verse. The course will also cover voices of reform through essays, speeches, and poems by Riis, Addams, Zitkala-Sa, Ida B. Wells, Booker T. Washington, Du Bois, Sojourner Truth, and others to see how writing is built to change a reader's mind.
