Kindergarten reading

This check is given by a Test Administrator

Print concepts, letters, rhyming and reading aloud have to be watched and heard, so a Test Administrator gives this check and marks it. It runs on two screens: the child sees large print and nothing to press, and the Test Administrator sees the same items with the answers.

  • Test Administrator: open the session on this device. A six-letter code appears.
  • Child: on a second device, open the join page and type the code. Or, on one computer, open the child’s screen in a second window on a shared display.
  • Have ready: a picture book, and paper and a pencil for the last section.
  • Allow 25 to 35 minutes. Sit beside the child, not across. If the child tires, take a break and keep this tab open.
  • Do not tell the child whether an answer is right. Say “good trying” either way. Stop a section after five wrong in a row.
  • Eleven sections, in order. Section J, a story read aloud to the child, cannot be skipped: it is the only part that tells not reading yet from a language need.
  • If this page is refreshed by accident, the check picks up where it was. The copy that makes that possible, including the names and dates on the start form, stays in this browser tab only, and is deleted when the results appear or the tab is closed. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Before the session opens

These print at the top of the results. They stay in this browser tab and are not sent anywhere or saved to an account.
